Constructive Criticism

Recently, I gave a semi review of a local dj show I went to. The headliner was great but the opening guy was pretty weak. I mentioned online how i didn’t think he did a very good job of opening for such a skilled headliner. Well he read my review and flew off the handle slinging insults at me. After a few messages back and forth, he admitted privately that his set wasn’t all that great, and how he was having equipment problems but his friends told him it was good so he assumed it was.

I’m passionate about DJing and it bugs me when I see some piss poor DJ out there who cant mix a glass of iced tea get up on stage and put on a half assed performance and think they are a hero because of it. Never mind talk shit about someone who calls them out on it.  So if someone who knows what they are talking about says that you didn’t play very well, take a step back and think about it and improve for next time.

Talking and Dancing…

I saw this recently at a club. A friend was going off to a sick tune and some random guy walked up to him and tapped him on the shoulder to start a conversation. He replied but his groove was shot. Random keeps on the conversation so my buddy stops dancing completely to continue the conversation… then random runs out of his witty banter, and the two of them are standing on the dance floor with arms crossed bobbing their head staring at the dj… This just reminded me of how annoying it is when somebody tries to talk to me while I am dancing. If i’m just bopping my head on the dancefloor, sure say hi, but leave it at that. I’m enjoying the music, unless you are telling me that my car is on fire or somebody is fighting my girlfriend, don’t bother me, or anyone else who is dancing, because you look like an asshole. thank you :)

Dancing on the DJ stage…

I know you want to be the center of attention and have everybody look at you while the DJ is playing… But that area up there is reserved for the people who are a part of the show. We have all kinds of gear up there attached to wires that you will trip over, and the DJ rig is certainly not a place for you to set your drink down. Just imagine tripping over a cable and killing the sound, while falling flat on your face for everyone to see. Save yourself the embarrassment and your next three paycheques because that shit is expensive. If you need some room to dance, there is always the back of the dance floor. So please, show some respect and stay off the stage.

Friday night in Winnipeg. A Canadian dubstep hero! looking forward to being a part of this show as vj iCandy.
*update- Mark Instinct killed it, plain and simple. Hyping up the crowd to the max and playing banger after banger in a flawless set. Had a chance to chat with him before and after the show and hes a super rad guy as well. I know thats not very relevant to the average party goer, but i felt it should be stated. check out his soundcloud page http://soundcloud.com/Mark_Instinct. i’m rocking out to them as we speak. mmmmm
I had to step out so I missed a good chunk of K!mmy, and Will Bensons set, but K!mmy was filling the dancefloor shortly after the doors opened, and by the time i got back Will Benson was rocking it. Good job guys.
Sw@t also played an amazing set, no surprise there. From electro to dnb, dubstep to drumstep, she had all of the bases covered and took care of business up there.
i’m trying to think of something bad to say to put the asshole in basshole, but i can’t think of a single thing. I’m going to try to get my hands on some of the pictures and video of the night to post them here, i have some iCandy clips and i’ll be making a little video and putting it on my iCandy website: www.vjicandy.com
Big ups to Encore Beats for a hugely successful first event, looking forward to the next one.

i have been a dj for many many years and within the past 5 years i have gotten into vj’ing. Most recently i have teamed up with dj sw@t and created k@_boom!, a dj/vj duo where we take turns mixing tunes and mixing videos. high energy party music and dirty grimey beats with all sorts of visual stimulation, its a ton of fun and brings something new to the table.

big thanks to Kirsten and Jackie for the filming and editing :)
