Constructive Criticism
Recently, I gave a semi review of a local dj show I went to. The headliner was great but the opening guy was pretty weak. I mentioned online how i didn’t think he did a very good job of opening for such a skilled headliner. Well he read my review and flew off the handle slinging insults at me. After a few messages back and forth, he admitted privately that his set wasn’t all that...

Talking and Dancing...
I saw this recently at a club. A friend was going off to a sick tune and some random guy walked up to him and tapped him on the shoulder to start a conversation. He replied but his groove was shot. Random keeps on the conversation so my buddy stops dancing completely to continue the conversation… then random runs out of his witty banter, and the two of them are standing on the dance floor...

Dancing on the DJ stage...
I know you want to be the center of attention and have everybody look at you while the DJ is playing… But that area up there is reserved for the people who are a part of the show. We have all kinds of gear up there attached to wires that you will trip over, and the DJ rig is certainly not a place for you to set your drink down. Just imagine tripping over a cable and killing the sound, while...

Hosting an out of town DJ.
We’ve all done it. Taken a dj gig in a smaller town and been offered a room at the promoters house instead of a hotel. Its usually no big deal, especially if you know the promoter and have worked with them before. I think the one thing overlooked is having a reliable ride to the venue. It seems that the person in charge of driving the DJ to the gig feels its ok to get hammered while hanging...

( hello hello hello
Dj p_a - hello hello hello by Djp_A on Mixcloud recorded in october 2010, this mix has mostly electro, with bassline house, and some breakbeats for good measure. it was forcefully removed (kicking and screaming) from my soundcloud page shortly after it was uploaded and i never got to promote it properly…until now!

& dj mixes less than an hour long
I’m seeing more and more of this lately, dj mixes that are 30 minutes, sometimes less than that… The standard dj set is an hour, so when you are making a mix, shoot for that. Cause when I see an online mix that is 24 minutes long, it just tells me that you can’t make a mix for an hour without trainwrecking.

using the dj booth as a coat or bag check
I think its common courtesy for dj’s to not treat the dj booth as a storage locker for friends/girlfriends ect. i understand we need a place to keep our stuff, but when everyone and their uncle has bags and jackets back there and they feel its ok to get on stage or behind the decks and rummage through bags, its annoying and distracting, and that’s how things get stolen. If you are...
